Clemson President Overwhelmed by Emotional Moment at His Daughter’s Special Achievement
Clemson University President James Clements was genuinely surprised by his daughter’s college graduation on Thursday. In a heartwarming video that quickly gained popularity online, Grace Clements joyfully ran to her father and embraced him, causing both of them to tumble onto the stage. They shared smiles as the crowd erupted in applause.
As Clements helped Grace back to her feet, he affectionately kissed her on the head before giving her another warm hug. Grace was among eight other students graduating from the ClemsonLIFE program, which supports individuals with intellectual disabilities in gaining life skills. In a lighthearted Instagram post, President Clements remarked, “ClemsonLIFE teaches independence, job skills… and apparently, how to sack a university president.
#DadDown.” The ClemsonLIFE program is designed to provide a college experience focused on functional academics, independent living, and social skills, helping students thrive in a supportive environment. The university further celebrated this moment, stating that Grace’s affectionate hug—and tackle—served as a touching reminder of what makes Clemson truly special. The program had previously gained attention in the fall of 2024 when a video featuring ClemsonLIFE junior Charlie McGee went viral.
In the clip, Charlie joyfully accepted a bid from his chosen fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, with brotherhood members enthusiastically surrounding him in celebration. Grace also found her place in the Clemson community through Greek life, being a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. As she graduated, her sorority shared their pride: “What a privilege it has been having [@skittles_mom] as our sister for the past 3 years.
We love you SO much and can’t wait to see all you accomplish!”
