Chinese Couple Arrested for Smuggling Biological Pathogen into the United States
A researcher from China and her boyfriend are facing serious charges related to the smuggling of a dangerous biological pathogen into the United States. The pathogen, known as Fusarium graminearum, poses a significant threat to crops and can lead to severe economic losses. Federal documents unsealed on Tuesday reveal that 33-year-old Yunqing Jian, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan, and her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, 34, were charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, smuggling goods, and making false statements to investigators. The case originated when Liu attempted to enter the United States through Detroit Metropolitan Airport in July and border officers discovered the pathogen concealed in his backpack.
The materials were packaged in small plastic baggies hidden within tissues. Both Jian and Liu had previously researched the pathogen during their university studies in China. At first, Liu claimed ignorance regarding the contents of his bag but later admitted he had purposefully hidden the samples, aware of the restrictions on such materials. Liu’s intention was to use the University of Michigan’s laboratory to engage in research on the pathogen.
In contrast, Jian denied any knowledge of Liu’s actions or research plans. However, an investigation of their electronic devices revealed WeChat messages from 2022, where they discussed smuggling seeds into the U.S.
A federal judge ordered Jian to remain in custody, designating her a flight risk, while Liu remains at large following the discovery of the pathogen. The FBI Counterintelligence Division is overseeing the investigation. U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon highlighted the national security implications of the case, noting that Fusarium graminearum causes significant harm to livestock and crops globally.
In response, the University of Michigan stated it has not received funding from the Chinese government for the research conducted by the accused individuals and will cooperate fully with law enforcement.
