North Korea claims leader Kim oversaw missile tests simulating nuclear attacks on adversaries.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently oversaw tests of short-range ballistic missile systems that simulated nuclear counterstrikes against U.S. and South Korean forces, as reported by state media. The North has continued to blame its adversaries for rising tensions, which they attribute to joint military exercises conducted by these nations. This report follows detections of multiple missile launches by South Korea’s military from North Korea’s eastern coast, which may also be linked to the country’s potential weapons exports to Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the missile tests involved a mobile ballistic system resembling Russia’s Iskander, along with 600-millimeter multiple rocket launchers classified as ballistic by South Korean officials. North Korea insists that these systems could be equipped with “tactical” nuclear weapons for use in battle. The tests aimed to enhance the capabilities of military units operating these missile and rocket systems to ensure quick responses in a nuclear crisis.
The KCNA criticized the U.S. and its allies for escalating military exercises in the region, claiming such actions are preparations for nuclear conflict. Additionally, Kim emphasized the importance of strengthening his country’s nuclear forces to deter and engage in warfare, urging improvements in combat readiness and precision strike capabilities. South Korea’s Unification Ministry condemned the missile launches as a “clear act of provocation,” which violates U.N. Security Council resolutions and threatens regional stability.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff in South Korea reported that multiple missiles were launched from the Wonsan area, with the longest flight reaching about 500 miles. This recent launch is notable as it marks North Korea’s first ballistic activity since earlier in March, coinciding with U.S.-South Korean military drills. Tensions have intensified on the Korean Peninsula as Kim continues to advance nuclear and missile programs while also supporting Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine.
