Netanyahu reports Israeli strikes aimed at location close to Syrian presidential palace.

Israel conducted an airstrike over a target near the presidential palace in Damascus, Syria, early on Friday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the operation, reiterating a strong commitment to protect the Druze community in Syria. This strike is the second within two days, executed as part of Israel’s pledge to safeguard the minority group that has faced sectarian violence from Sunni militants recently.

The Druze community, which practices a faith rooted in Islam and has a significant presence in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, is perceived by Israel to be under threat amidst the ongoing conflict in Syria. The Israeli military’s actions reflect a deep-seated mistrust of Sunni Islamist factions, which gained prominence after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December. This instability presents a considerable challenge for interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is attempting to gain control over the fragmented nation.

In a joint statement with Defense Minister Israel Katz, Netanyahu emphasized the message sent to the Syrian regime, stating, “We will not allow (Syrian) forces to deploy south of Damascus or any threat to the Druze community.” The Israeli military reported that the strike occurred near the location of the palace without detailing the exact target. Syrian authorities have yet to respond.

Since Assad’s removal, Israel has taken strategic actions to secure territory in the southwest, aiming to counteract what it perceives as rising threats. Al-Sharaa, once an Al-Qaeda commander, has pledged to govern Syria inclusively. However, recent sectarian violence, including deadly clashes that erupted this week, has intensified fears among minority groups regarding the escalating influence of radical Islamists.

This week’s turmoil began with a provocation involving a controversial recording and led to violent confrontations, resulting in multiple casualties.
