Tourist Boat Capsizes in Vietnam Storm, Resulting in 37 Fatalities and 5 People Missing

HA LONG BAY, Vietnam — A tragic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when a boat capsized during a sudden thunderstorm while carrying tourists on a sightseeing tour. Reports indicate that 37 people have died, with five others still missing. The vessel, known as the Wonder Sea, was transporting 48 passengers along with five crew members, all of whom were Vietnamese, around the popular tourist destination of Ha Long Bay. Rescue operations managed to save 11 individuals, and authorities later found the bodies near the site of the capsizing.

Initial reports had mistakenly stated that 12 people had been rescued. The boat overturned due to strong winds, according to local media. Among the survivors is a 14-year-old boy who was trapped in the hull for four hours before being rescued. Most of those on board were tourists from Hanoi, with around 20 of them being children.

Compounding the tragedy, a tropical storm is approaching the region. National weather forecasts warn that Storm Wipha is expected to strike Vietnam’s northern areas next week, including the coastline of Ha Long Bay. This development raises additional concerns for the ongoing rescue efforts and the safety of both locals and tourists in the area. The incident has cast a somber shadow over what is typically a vibrant tourist destination, highlighting the potential dangers of maritime excursions, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

As rescue operations continue, authorities are focusing on recovering the missing individuals and addressing the needs of those affected by this devastating event.
