Severe Rain in South Korea Leads to 4 Deaths and 1,300 Evacuations
SEOUL, South Korea — Recent heavy rainfall in South Korea has resulted in at least four fatalities and prompted the evacuation of over 1,300 residents, as reported by officials on Thursday. One tragic incident occurred in Osan, located just south of Seoul, where a retaining wall of an overpass collapsed due to the intense downpour.
This resulted in one person losing their life when their car was buried under soil and concrete. In another related incident, three additional bodies were discovered in various locations on Thursday: one in a submerged vehicle, another in a stream, and a third in a flooded basement in southern areas.
Authorities are currently investigating whether these incidents were directly linked to the severe weather. As the torrential rains continue, the situation has led to the evacuation of 1,382 people from their homes.
The Interior and Safety Ministry also reported the cancellation of 46 flights due to the weather conditions. Parts of the southern region, particularly the South Chungcheong province, have been severely impacted, receiving up to 16.5 inches of rainfall since the onset of the storms on Wednesday.
This extreme weather has not only affected residents and their homes but also disrupted transportation and daily life in the region. The authorities remain on high alert as they assess the ongoing risks and provide support to those affected.
