Vance Boelter Charged with Federal Murder in Case of Slain Minnesota Lawmaker and Her Spouse
A Minnesota man, Vance Boelter, 57, stands accused of fatally shooting the state’s former house speaker in what officials describe as a politically motivated assassination. In a letter addressed to FBI Director Kash Patel, found in Boelter’s car, he claimed that the state’s governor had directed him to kill two U.S. senators. Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson noted that this letter appears to be an attempt by Boelter to justify his actions. However, he clarified that there is no evidence suggesting Boelter intended to target Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar or Tina Smith, both Democrats.
A spokesperson for Governor Tim Walz has not yet commented on the situation. The letter further included Boelter’s assertions about having performed military missions across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. This revelation was made public following a federal grand jury indictment on six counts, including stalking and murder through a firearm, in connection with the targeted shootings of two state lawmakers and their spouses. While it remains uncertain whether federal authorities will pursue the death penalty, Boelter’s arraignment is scheduled for September, with a trial set for November.
On June 14, Boelter allegedly killed Democratic state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their Brooklyn Park home, while impersonating a law enforcement officer. He also injured Democratic state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at their nearby residence. Remarkably, their daughter, Hope Hoffman, escaped unharmed but described the traumatic experience of witnessing the attack. After a two-day manhunt, authorities apprehended Boelter crawling in a field.
He pleaded not guilty to several state charges, including second-degree murder. Notably, a notebook was discovered in his possession, listing various politicians, including those from neighboring states. At a recent court hearing, Boelter expressed eagerness for the truth to emerge regarding the events surrounding the shootings.
