Toddler dies in hot car while mother receives lip filler treatment, according to police reports.
A California mother, Maya Hernandez, is facing serious charges following the death of her 1-year-old son, who was left in a hot car while she underwent lip filler injections. Court documents reveal that Hernandez, 20, allegedly left her children for over two hours in a parked vehicle during a heatwave, with outside temperatures reaching 101 degrees. The incident occurred on June 29, also resulting in the hospitalization of her 2-year-old son, who survived. Hernandez has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of willful cruelty to a child.
She has pleaded not guilty and is currently being held on a $1 million bail. There was no indication in court records of a lawyer representing her. According to a Bakersfield police report, Hernandez acknowledged the irresponsibility of her actions. She admitted contemplating the situation as she exited the car but failed to provide a valid reason for leaving her children unattended.
During her salon visit, she left her 2022 Toyota Corolla running with the air conditioning on and claimed to have provided her children with candy, crackers, milk, and a cellphone to occupy them. Despite her belief that the vehicle would remain operational, authorities discovered that the car automatically shuts off after an hour of inactivity. Hernandez did not check on her children between 2 and 4:30 p.m. Upon returning, she found her younger son foaming at the mouth and shaking.
She attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before calling 911. The child was found to have an internal temperature of 107 degrees upon arrival at the emergency room and was pronounced dead shortly before 6 p.m. The older son had a temperature of 99 degrees but was stable and placed in protective custody, as he was better able to manage his body temperature.
