First Look: Ryan Gosling in Space in New ‘Project Hail Mary’ Trailer Release

“Project Hail Mary,” the highly anticipated science fiction thriller featuring Ryan Gosling, stars a middle school teacher thrust into the extraordinary role of saving humanity from the depths of space. This film is inspired by Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name. The premise revolves around Ryland Grace, portrayed by Gosling, who embarks on a desperate mission to understand a mysterious astronomical phenomenon endangering human survival. An exclusive trailer, aired on “TODAY” June 30, showcases Gosling in a striking new look with long hair and a beard, delivering the line, “I just woke up from a coma,” underscoring his bewilderment.

Ryland’s self-doubt is further highlighted as he repeatedly declares, “And I’m not an astronaut,” reflecting his unexpected journey ahead. As the trailer unfolds, it reveals that the sun is dying, and Ryland, a former scientist turned teacher, emerges as the government’s last hope for deciphering the crisis. The mission, aptly named Project Hail Mary, acknowledges the precariousness of his situation, with Ryland’s expertise in molecular biology positioning him as Earth’s best chance at survival. Accompanied by a gripping soundtrack featuring Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times,” viewers catch glimpses of Ryland’s struggle for survival in the vast expanse of space, far from home.

Throughout his daunting mission, he may even encounter extraterrestrial life as he works to relay critical information back to Earth. The film boasts an impressive cast, including Sandra Hüller, recognized for her roles in “The Zone of Interest” and “Anatomy of a Fall.” With a screenplay penned by Drew Goddard and direction by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, “Project Hail Mary” is set to release in theaters and IMAX on March 20, 2026. Andy Weir, who previously wrote “The Martian,” continues to explore themes of survival amidst the cosmos.
