Denver Zoo Closes Early Following Social Media-Inspired Teenage ‘Takeover’ Incident
The Denver Zoo is set to close early on Saturday in response to a planned social media-driven event termed the “City Park Takeover,” which is expected to attract a large crowd of teenagers to the surrounding area. A zoo spokesperson announced that the facility will open its gates at 7:30 a.m. and close by 1 p.m. as a precaution against potential disturbances associated with the gathering. Last weekend, a similar event occurred at the Northfield Mall where a significant number of teenagers converged, resulting in some altercations that necessitated the involvement of law enforcement.
Although the organizers behind these events remain unclear, zoo officials are taking the situation seriously. Zoo spokesperson Jake Kubie expressed concern over past incidents related to similarly organized gatherings, which have led to disruptions, vandalism, and even damage to local businesses. Kubie emphasized that the zoo does not believe it is a specific target of these events and noted there has been no particular information indicating a direct threat.
However, in light of recent activities, the zoo prefers to prioritize caution. “We’re always leaning towards caution over everything else,” he stated. Despite last weekend’s event not leading to any arrests or property damage, the Denver Police Department is aware of the ongoing “takeover” events and is preparing to mitigate their effects on the community.
Kubie reassured the public that the zoo is ready for any situation. Given its expansive 80-acre campus, which houses 2,500 animals and welcomes nearly two million guests annually, the zoo is committed to being prepared for any eventuality, ensuring the safety of both its visitors and residents in the area.
