Virginia Democrats Aim at Trump in Race to Succeed Gerry Connolly in Congress

Democrats competing to fill the late Rep. Gerry Connolly’s seat in northern Virginia are focusing on one main issue: who can effectively confront President Donald Trump. In his announcement video, James Walkinshaw, a former chief of staff to Connolly and current Fairfax County Supervisor, recounted how Trump officials threatened legal repercussions for local officials in so-called sanctuary cities. This incident occurred last December when letters were sent warning about jail time for those supporting sanctuary laws. State Senator Stella Pekarsky launched her campaign by emphasizing her Greek heritage, which she believes equips her to oppose Trump.

Meanwhile, state Delegate Irene Shin criticized the Democratic Party for employing outdated strategies while Trump continues to undermine government functions. With a significant number of federal workers residing in this heavily Democratic district, Trump’s policies, including a mass deportation program, have become central to discussions among the candidates. Democratic voters are heading to the polls for a special primary, with early voting having taken place for three days prior. The victor of this primary will heavily favor the September 9 general election to fill the remaining term that Connolly held.

Walkinshaw, who received Connolly’s endorsement before his passing, highlighted his experience working under Connolly during critical policy battles, arguing that he is well-equipped to tackle the Trump administration’s challenges. Pekarsky reflected on how her office received calls from worried federal workers as soon as Trump took office. She is determined to take on significant fights, drawing from her experiences in local government. Shin advocates for a vision beyond merely opposing Trump, emphasizing the need for Democrats to establish clear policies that protect federal workers from potential future threats.

Other candidates in the race include various professionals with different backgrounds, all uniting in their opposition to Trump’s government dismantling initiatives.
