At least 11 fatalities reported in San Antonio flooding, with many individuals still unaccounted for.

At least 11 individuals have been confirmed dead following severe flooding in San Antonio, with search efforts ongoing for several missing persons, according to city officials on Friday. The flooding occurred early Thursday after thunderstorms were triggered by an upper-level trough moving eastward across Texas, which also generated two confirmed tornadoes as reported by the National Weather Service. Initial reports suggest that approximately three people are still unaccounted for in addition to the confirmed fatalities.

The San Antonio Fire Department stated, “Several individuals remain unaccounted for,” as search operations, supported by the San Antonio Police Department and Texas A&M Task Force 1, are concentrated near Salado Creek and Leon Creek. The teams are conducting thorough ground searches across creek beds and debris fields. On Thursday, it was noted that 15 vehicles had been swept away in the rising waters on or near Perrin Beitel Road, which received nearly 8 inches of rain from midnight to 4 a.m. Fire officials reported that ten people had been rescued, while two others managed to escape on their own.

At least one body was discovered a mile from the creek crossing. Angela Richards, who lives in the area, recounted her husband’s distress during the flooding. Stevie Richards, 42, called her early on Thursday to inform her that his car had stalled in the fast-rising waters.

“I could hear whatever the car hit and then the water taking over the car,” she recalled. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus emphasized the unpredictable danger of the flooding, noting that the fast-moving water made it hard to gauge its depth. The weather service confirmed two EF0 tornadoes had touched down in Hays County, causing minor damage.

Throughout the city, significant damage occurred to low-water crossings, with 18 roadways closed due to the flooding. Mayor Ron Nirenberg expressed his condolences for the lives lost and hope that those missing would be found safe. As the weekend approaches, the forecast includes potential thunderstorms, with flood warnings remaining in effect for certain areas.

Floodwaters from earlier rains are predicted to continue moving downstream, raising concerns for local waterways.
