Searching for Marty McFly’s iconic guitar: The quest for ‘Back to the Future’ prop 40 years later.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In the iconic film “Back to the Future,” Marty McFly famously seized a guitar during a 1950s high school dance, strumming alongside the band in a bid to avoid vanishing from existence before returning to the 1980s. Unfortunately, unlike the character, the guitar used in the film has yet to be located.
As the beloved movie approaches its 40th anniversary, the search for the missing Cherry Red Gibson ES-345 has been reignited. Gibson, the renowned guitar manufacturer based in Nashville, has enlisted the help of the public to track down this famous instrument.
The company is also producing a documentary titled “Lost to the Future,” which will delve into the quest for the guitar as well as the film itself. In an engaging video accompanied by the movie’s theme song, several stars from “Back to the Future” including Michael J.
Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Lea Thompson make an earnest appeal for assistance. Notably, Huey Lewis, whose band provided one of the film’s most memorable songs, makes a surprise appearance in the video.
Christopher Lloyd, channeling his character Doc Brown, notes that the guitar has been “lost to the future,” while Fox humorously speculates that it might be hiding in a Teamster’s garage. In the film’s pivotal scene, McFly fills in for an injured band member at the “Enchantment under the Sea” dance, performing classic hits such as “Earth Angel” and “Johnny B.
Goode.” This leads to humorous antics, including McFly trying to showcase his favorite guitar styles, leaving the 1955 audience bewildered.
“I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet,” he quips, “But your kids are gonna love it.”
