Southern California Bishop Suspends Mass Requirement Amid Concerns Over Immigration Issues

In a significant move, San Bernardino Bishop Alberto Rojas has relieved parishioners from the obligation of attending Mass due to growing fears stemming from recent immigration detentions near two church properties in the diocese. The bishop, who oversees over 1.5 million Catholics in Southern California, made this rare decision, usually reserved for exceptional circumstances, such as during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rojas emphasized that this action is essential because many community members now fear being apprehended and potentially deported in public spaces, including churches. In his Wednesday statement, Rojas noted, “There is a real fear gripping many in our parish communities that if they venture out into any kind of public setting they will be arrested by immigration officers.”

The apprehension of individuals at the diocesan parishes has only exacerbated this atmosphere of anxiety. He aims to assure immigrant communities that the Church stands in solidarity with them during these challenging times.

Catholics typically must attend Mass on Sundays and holy days unless a serious reason prevents them. A similar move was made by the Diocese of Nashville in May, where individuals fearful of attending Mass due to immigration enforcement were excused, though not formally named as a dispensation.

Bishop Rojas, an immigrant himself from Mexico, has consistently advocated for immigrant rights. Following a recent increase in federal immigration enforcement in Southern California, including arrests in public areas, Rojas condemned these actions and called for a reconsideration of tactics that undermine human dignity and rights.

The communities served by the Diocese of San Bernardino, which is largely Latino, have contributed positively despite their legal status uncertainties, Rojas noted. Pastor Omar Coronado praised the bishop’s decision as a courageous act of support during a time of fear.
