Mountain Lion Attacks 4-Year-Old on Busy Trail in Olympic National Park, Leaving Child Injured

PORT ANGELES, Wash. — Over the weekend, a mountain lion attacked a 4-year-old child walking with their family on a popular trail in Olympic National Park, according to park officials. The incident occurred Sunday, prompting immediate medical attention as the injured child was airlifted to a trauma center in Seattle for treatment.

The attack took place near an overlook on Hurricane Ridge, a well-frequented area known for its stunning panoramic views. Park officials reported that they received the call about the incident around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday.

In response, paramedics and park staff quickly reached the scene to assist the child. Following the attack, rangers initiated a search for the mountain lion involved, which had been fitted with a tracking collar.

By Monday, the park staff had taken action to neutralize the animal—a term that generally signifies the killing of an animal responsible for an attack. According to the National Park Service, there is currently no ongoing threat to the public.

The safety of visitors remains a priority, and officials emphasize that such incidents are rare in the park. In an effort to maintain the privacy of the family involved, officials have chosen not to disclose any identifying information about the child.
