Andrew Cuomo Launches Third-Party Campaign for NYC Mayor, Set to Face Off Against Zohran Mamdani

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his intention to continue his campaign for New York City mayor, despite losing last month’s Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani. In a statement on social media, Cuomo proclaimed, “I’m in it to win it.”

Cuomo stepped down as governor in 2021 amid a wave of sexual harassment allegations but was initially viewed as a frontrunner for the Democratic nomination due to his extensive political connections. However, state assemblyman Mamdani, at just 33 years old, gained momentum toward the end of the campaign by advocating for a progressive agenda that resonated with voters looking for change.

In his recent comments, Cuomo criticized Mamdani for failing to provide tangible solutions, stating, “We need a city with lower rent, safer streets… You deserve a mayor with the experience and ideas to make it happen again.”

Acknowledging feedback from his supporters about his campaign efforts, Cuomo committed to more direct engagement with the public in the lead-up to the election, assuring, “Every day I’m going to be hitting the streets.” While Cuomo’s allies had emphasized his experience fighting against Donald Trump, he primarily focused his appeal on everyday issues that matter to New Yorkers.

Mamdani swiftly responded to Cuomo’s announcement, highlighting the contrast between his campaign, which prioritizes working-class New Yorkers, and the established politicians he accused of courting wealthy interests. He positioned his campaign as a fresh alternative to the status quo.

For the upcoming general election, Cuomo plans to run under the “Fight and Deliver” party line, which he established as a contingency following his primary defeat. He acknowledges the competitiveness of the race, which also includes former prosecutor Jim Walden and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

Despite criticism of Mamdani’s liberal stance, Cuomo emphasized the need for unity among candidates to pose a formidable challenge in November.
