Protesters Say “Kisses Yes, Bezos No,” as Wedding Celebration Sparks Division in Venice

In Venice, Italy, hundreds of protesters took to the streets on Saturday to voice their opposition to billionaire Jeff Bezos and his extravagant wedding celebrations with Lauren Sanchez Bezos. The event, which spanned three days and attracted numerous celebrities, has sparked controversy among residents tired of the impacts of overtourism and the associated rising costs of living. On Friday, the couple exchanged vows in a private ceremony attended by around 200 celebrity guests on the picturesque island of San Giorgio. While some viewed the wedding as a celebration, many locals and activists saw it as another example of the exploitation of Venice’s resources by the wealthy.

They contend that the city is under threat from overcrowding, soaring housing prices, and the looming danger of climate change. As the festivities reached their climax Saturday evening, protesters filled the narrow streets brandishing colorful banners with slogans such as “Kisses Yes, Bezos No” and “No Bezos, No War.” Their demonstration highlighted the stark contrast between the lavish wedding events and the struggles of ordinary Venetians. Martina Vergnano, a demonstrator, expressed anger at the wealth disparity, stating that such events worsen the existing precarious conditions of the city. Meanwhile, Bezos made headlines by donating 1 million euros each to three environmental organizations working to preserve Venice.

However, many protesters dismissed these contributions as mere “greenwashing,” arguing that they do little to address the real issues faced by the city. Activist Flavio Cogo stressed the desire for a Venice that prioritizes its residents over the wealthy elite. As details of the exclusive wedding leaked, the guest list included a mix of Hollywood stars and business leaders, adding to the spectacle of the event. The city administration defended the wedding as part of Venice’s long history of welcoming diverse visitors while grappling with the paradox of wealth and environmental sustainability.
