An Air India plane carrying 242 individuals, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members, crashed near the major international airport in Ahmedabad, India, on Thursday. The airline, along with the Indian government, confirmed the incident, which has resulted in widespread devastation. Footage shared on social media shortly after the crash shows thick black smoke rising from a civilian area south of the airport, with scenes of destruction evident at the crash site.

Images from the scene depict the plane’s tail protruding from the wall of a nearby building, while rescuers sift through charred remains and assess the damage to a downed tree close to a residential complex.
