OpenAI Reaches Over 3 Million Paying Business Users and Introduces New Workplace Features

On Wednesday, OpenAI announced a significant increase in its business user base, reporting 3 million paying users compared to 2 million in February. This growth follows the company’s breakthrough into the mainstream with its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, in late 2022. Following its initial success, OpenAI has been developing workplace-specific versions of its product.

The 3 million users include subscriptions to various services like ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Team, and ChatGPT Edu. According to OpenAI’s chief operating officer, Brad Lightcap, there is a strong connection between the rising popularity of ChatGPT as a consumer tool and its adoption in business settings. As of February, the company also supported around 400 million weekly active users.

Looking ahead, OpenAI anticipates generating a revenue of $12.7 billion this year. In a confidential disclosure, it was shared that the company previously expected a financial loss of $5 billion against $3.7 billion in revenue last September. Lightcap noted that OpenAI’s business solutions are gaining traction across various sectors, including highly regulated industries such as finance and healthcare.

Some notable clients include Lowe’s, Morgan Stanley, and Uber. On the same day, OpenAI launched updates to its business offerings. ChatGPT Team and ChatGPT Enterprise users can now utilize “connectors,” which facilitate data integration from third-party platforms like Google Drive and Dropbox directly within ChatGPT.

A new feature called “record mode” was also introduced, allowing users to record and transcribe meetings, aiding post-meeting follow-up using integrated documents and files. OpenAI is reportedly signing up nine enterprises each week, and Lightcap expressed a commitment to maintaining this growth momentum as businesses increasingly recognize the importance of such tools in today’s knowledge-driven economy.
