Live Updates: Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Trial – Former Assistant Brendan Paul to Testify as Prosecution Concludes
Brendan Paul, a former personal assistant to Combs, is slated to testify today in an ongoing trial where Combs faces multiple serious charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey indicated that the prosecution could wrap its case by Friday, although plans were disrupted when court adjourned early Wednesday morning due to a juror’s illness. Combs’ legal team estimates they will need between two to five days to present their defense, but this timeline may be subject to change.
Combs is confronted with five criminal counts, including a racketeering conspiracy, two counts of sex trafficking through force, fraud, or coercion, and two counts related to transportation for prostitution. He has firmly denied all allegations against him, amidst the potential for graphic content during the trial proceedings. In today’s session, the court will provide both the defense and prosecution with a proposed jury charge, which contains guidelines to assist jurors in their deliberations.
Judge Arun Subramanian stated that the charge will include instructions for any adjustments the parties might propose, ensuring no critical details are overlooked. In another development, Judge Subramanian denied a defense request concerning Juror No. 7, stating that a questioning of the juror had occurred earlier this week.
Such applications are typically made to request a juror’s excusal based on concerns raised by the defense. As the trial progresses into its 27th day, Judge Subramanian has instructed both sides to start preparing for potential jury deliberations, which may commence next week. Preparations include organizing exhibits and discussing possible redactions from witness transcripts that jurors might wish to revisit.
Wednesday’s court session was shortened due to a juror’s vertigo, and there was no hearing the previous day because of the federal holiday commemorating Juneteenth. Brendan Paul, a former Syracuse University basketball player, was initially scheduled to testify on Tuesday but will now take the stand today to discuss allegations regarding drugs he reportedly provided to Combs. Additionally, a juror’s request for time off to attend their child’s graduation has resulted in a modified schedule, with court convening for a shorter day.
