Inmate from Orleans Parish Jail Apprehended After Over a Month of Evading Authorities
Authorities announced on Friday that Antoine Massey, an inmate who escaped from the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility in May, has been captured after more than a month on the run. The Louisiana State Police confirmed that Massey was taken into custody at a residence in New Orleans.
During a news conference, Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson revealed that the information leading to his arrest was received early that morning, with Massey apprehended by 3:30 p.m.
At the time of his escape, the 33-year-old Massey was facing charges including domestic abuse involving strangulation, motor vehicle theft, and a parole violation. The state police indicated that additional charges against him might be forthcoming.
Following his capture, Massey is set to be transferred to the state’s maximum-security prison located in Angola, Louisiana. Meanwhile, one other inmate, Derrick Groves, remains at large.
Groves was previously convicted of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick issued a statement urging him to surrender peacefully, asserting that law enforcement is determined to capture him.
A reward of $50,000 is still being offered for information leading to Groves’ arrest. Massey and Groves were part of a group of ten inmates who escaped by removing a toilet from a cell wall and fleeing through the resulting hole at the Orleans Parish Justice Center on May 16.
Authorities reported that a message reading “Too easy LOL” was found scrawled on the wall. In the aftermath of the escape, more than a dozen individuals have been arrested for allegedly assisting the inmates, including a jail maintenance worker who is accused of disabling the water supply to facilitate their escape.
The worker’s attorney has denied any involvement, claiming the water was turned off due to a clogged toilet in an unused handicap cell.
