One Fatality from Sewage Boat Explosion on Hudson River in New York

An explosion aboard a boat that was docked on the Hudson River and carrying raw sewage resulted in the death of a veteran city employee on Saturday, according to authorities. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. near the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Another worker sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital, while a third individual on the vessel declined medical assistance.

The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has stated that there is no indication of criminal intent. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that the incident took place while the workers were engaged in activities involving flames or sparks.

First responders discovered a 59-year-old man unconscious in the river, and unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man, whose name has not been disclosed, was a long-serving employee of the city’s Department of Environmental Protection, having dedicated 33 years to his work. Mayor Adams expressed condolences, highlighting the man’s commitment to public service and extending sympathy to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

Following the explosion, raw sewage was spread across the deck of the vessel, requiring firefighters and emergency personnel to undergo decontamination procedures. Fortunately, the Department of Environmental Protection indicated that there were no apparent environmental impacts as a result of the explosion.
